To avoid contamination by intestinal parasites and to combat their spread, good hygiene habits must be adopted. Be particularly vigilant if you are travelling to a country with a warm and humid climate.
GOOD DAILY HABITS TO PREVENT INTESTINAL PARASITOSES
Some simple gestures help to avoid being contaminated by intestinal parasites and to reduce the diffusion of digestive parasites (oxyurosis, giardiasis, ascaridiosis, tænia…), especially within families and communities:
- wash your hands with SOAP and water frequently, especially before and after each contact with your child with parasitosis;
- teach your children how to wash their hands properly
- often cut your child’s fingernails to stay short;
- do not swap bottles, lollipops and cutlery within your family, and clean them immediately after use;
- change underwear daily;
- regularly wash bedding, children’s toys and living quarters after dusting;
- during the day, open the blinds or curtains in the bedrooms. This helps to fight against pinstripes, which are sensitive to light;
- Cook the meat well (to avoid the tænia) and, in General, observe good food hygiene;
- make sure not to swallow water from pools, lakes or streams;
- If you have a pet, administer the preventive pest control treatment that your veterinarian has prescribed on a regular basis.
GOOD REFLEXES IF YOU GO TO A HOT AND HUMID AREA
In tropical or sub-tropical countries, care should be taken to ensure food hygiene to prevent digestive parasites (giardiasis, amoebiasis, oxyurosis, ascaridiosis, tænia).
- Wash your hands often, especially before meals and before handling food, and after going to the toilet. Have a gel or a hydro-alcoholic
- solution, useful if you could never have SOAP and clean water.
- Only consume bottled water in the bottle in front of you, or made to drink by boiling (1 minute at large broilers) or by filtration (portable filter) and disinfection. Ask your pharmacist for advice on disinfectants to use.
- Avoid using ice cubes, ice creams and sherbets.
- Drink pasteurized or boiled milk.
- Peel the fruits yourself.
- Avoid crudités, shellfish, warmed dishes and fresh fruit juices prepared in an artisanal way.
- Cook eggs, meats, fish and crustaceans well.
As a stroll, take the following precautions to avoid oral parasites, but also by cutaneous means:
- do not walk and bathe in fresh water;
- do not drink fresh water from lakes, rivers, ponds, backwaters;
- do not walk barefoot on the beaches and do not lie on the sand, use bath sheets;
- wear closed shoes when moving on muddy or damp soils;
- Don’t let your child play in the ground.
