Even though I’ve been natural for a while now—starting around sophomore year of college—it’s taken me some time to really get accustomed to the nuances of my curl pattern. Nowadays doing my hair is less challenging than the early days (although I definitely still have growing pains). For one, my curly hair tends to flatten out overnight, and no matter how luscious and bouncy the curls were the day before, I usually need a little help bringing them back to life each day with a spring in their step. Nine times out of 10, my lovely assistant for this magic act of zhuzh is a trusty spray bottle filled with warm water and a few pumps of conditioner, but this combination isn’t always super practical and definitely has its drawbacks.
The time-consuming application can be messy when drops of this formula run down my shoulders and back after a few spritzes. Waiting for my hair to completely dry can take ages (especially since I’ve been avoiding hot tools on my slightly heat-damaged hair). But after discovering DevaCurl’s DevaFresh Scalp and Curl Revitalizer—which is essentially dry shampoo in spray bottle form—it’s changed my hair game (and awkward, lopsided ‘fro) for good.
Like all DevaCurl products, the spray is designed with curly-haired types in mind. It’s lightly scented with kombucha to minimize hair and scalp odor, but also intended to help fight frizz and improve curl definition at the same time. Unlike other traditionally starchy dry shampoos, this spray doesn’t leave any white residue behind in my hair or make me feel like I’m coating it with a bunch of product. I’d even say that its consistency is similar to my favorite facial spray—with a little extra body added in.
