What is hay fever?
Hay fever is a common disease. Also known as allergic rhinitis or nasal allergies, hay fever can be seasonal, perennial (year-round) or professional. Rhinitis refers to irritation or inflammation of the nose.
Symptoms usually include:
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Watery, red or itchy eyes
- Itching of the throat or roof of the mouth
- Post-nasal secretions
- Itchy nose
- Sinus Pressure and pain
- Itchy skin
Symptoms may become long-term if hay fever is not treated.
How do hay fever symptoms differ from other conditions?
Although the symptoms of hay fever and the symptoms of a cold may seem similar, the biggest difference is that the cold will cause the flu and aches. The treatments for both conditions are also very different.
Other conditions with symptoms similar to hay fever:
- Cold Head
- Infectious rhinitis, including upper respiratory tract infections
- Irritating rhinitis, reaction to physical or chemical changes
In contrast to hay fever, these conditions can also lead to feverish symptoms.
